This week we set up a tension infiltrometer experiment to estimate the unsaturated soil hydraulic properties of our soil. The large soil core we extracted from the Jizera Mountains was cut down to proper size and fitted with an aluminum collar. Three holes were strategically drilled into the core at each soil horizon. These holes were plugged with compression fittings where our tensiometers would be installed. To prepare the tensiometers we saturated them using a pressure chamber, equilibrated their internal pressure, and inserted them ~10cm into the compression fittings. Copper sulfate was then added to two 25-liter jugs of distilled water to mimic water chemistry characteristics in the mountains. We connected a pressure pump to the core to remove residual moisture and adjusted the temperature of the water jugs to resemble ambient conditions.
