This week we ran our ponded infiltration experiment. Before beginning, we made sure our core sample was properly dried and the tensiometer’s internal pressure was still equilibrated. To begin the experiment 500mL of water was added to the core. Once the water had infiltrated beyond a reference point, 250mL of water was added. Another 250mL dose was added every time the water reached the reference point. Times and volumes of water additions were manually recorded while a Campbell Scientific logger took readings from the tipping bucket and tensiometers. The experiment was performed twice and continued until 16L of water infiltrated the core or 2 hours passed. The rest of the week was spent analyzing this data, along with an excursion to the Brno CEITEC research center to have scans of our soil core taken at the Laboratory of X-ray CT.
