This week started with two more lectures from Dr. Sanda. The first lecture introduced us to mathematical modelling. It was very well timed to get us prepped for the Student Workshop on Scientific Computing in Decin. This workshop had graduate students and faculty members from CTU and other universities from around Europe. It was attended by around 30 people. The presentations were primarily focused on mathematical modeling equations and the different ways that models can be used. Our hostel was next to the castle and a big park. We were able to explore a little of Decin and even explored a little bit of the mountains while on a hike.
The second lecture was on geophysical measurements and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). This is essentially using a series of four probes to send and receive electrical current in the soil to get a series of overlapping slices. These slices allow you to create a cross section. An algorithm is used to interpret the data, which can show you cracks in the bedrock, saturated soils, and solid rock. This method will be used during our field trip on week five to Dr. Sanda’s weekend house for some hands on experience using ERT.
